Canyon State Electric, Internal Award for Video Series

Vince DiGuglielmo, Director of Strategy, has been with Canyon State Electric (CSE) for three years. His marketing career began in higher education. After graduating with a communications degree from the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, he investigated becoming a TV anchor at the University. He quickly realized this was not where his passion was rooted and ended up taking a job as a Video Production / Social Media Specialist for the university instead. After five years, he re-positioned and started working with an Ad Agency. While he enjoyed the breadth of companies and industries he got to work with, he eventually sought out a single-brand position so that he could focus on depth, and joined CSE. At the time, in the company’s 44 years, they had never hired a marketing person. The company had found success showcasing a strong financial record and recognized their need to increase Public Relations to reach their next set of goals.

CSE’s organizational culture is welcoming and innovative, with a highly qualified group of passionate people who are motivated by the company’s success. CSE encourages people to grow in their careers at all levels (Project Engineer to President.) They recently started a video series recognizing staff through peer-to-peer nominations. Team members were evaluated based on “6 Core Values” and received awards at their annual CSE Culture Awards night. HR and Marketing worked together to develop 60 submissions, leadership picked the winners, and the nominators recorded a video explaining why their chosen nominee deserved to be highlighted. In addition to selecting a winner for each core value, an all-around team member was recognized for exemplifying all 6.

Vince and I discussed how time is relative to good marketing. Planning ahead and getting people to buy in on the initiative (whether for external or internal means) is imperative. There are often many players involved in creating a Quals package, designing a proposal, or doing any other type of submittal, and the vision must resonate through all players. Business Development is, therefore, an internal activity as well. It starts with culture and the team members, the family, who embody the personality of CSE to their core.

His advice for teams deciding on a project or person to nominate is that the decision should be easy and a simple affirmation of quality work already completed. The stand-out effort should be obvious. Vince was especially excited to see CSE win at the Phelix Awards last year because it was a concrete affirmation of the company’s success in bringing a formal marketing team on board. He now manages a staff of 5 in CSE’s department of Growth & Development. When they shared the win at the company’s quarterly meeting, many of Vince’s team’s peers were equally excited as they didn’t know there even were awards for markers. Furthermore, it showed how unique the video series is, furthering the “Kool-Aid of Canyon State.”
