Think Like a CFO

Making Smarter Business Decisions in AEC
Winning work is only the beginning. The decisions we make about what to pursue, what to charge, what risks to accept, and how to deliver the work ultimately determine whether that win creates value for the firm.
Think Like a CFO is an interactive session designed to help AEC professionals at every level see the business behind the project. You don't need a finance background or a CFO title to think differently about how your everyday decisions affect profitability, risk, cash flow, and long-term growth.
Together, we'll look at the business of pursuing and delivering work through a CFO's lens. We'll explore questions such as:
- How much does it really cost to pursue a project—and when is an opportunity worth the investment?
- How can BD and marketing better evaluate a lead before the RFP ever arrives?
- Is winning more work always good for the business?
- What makes a project financially attractive—or potentially a "bad win"?
- How do fees, scope, contract terms, and client behaviors change the economics of a project?
- When should strategic value outweigh short-term profitability?
- How do decisions made during pursuit show up months later in project performance?
- What should marketers, business developers, principals, and operations leaders each be looking for?
You will walk away with these benefits:
Through AEC-specific scenarios and discussion, participants will practice looking beyond "Can we win it?" to ask the more important questions: Should we pursue it? What will it take to win? What are we risking? And if we win, will it actually be good business?
Participants will leave with a practical framework they can use to evaluate opportunities, ask better questions, communicate across disciplines, and make decisions that strengthen both individual projects and the firm.
Think Like a CFO isn't about becoming a finance expert. It's about understanding how your decisions create or deplete business value.
